Handsome Italian Oil-on-Canvas Five-Panel Screen
mid-19th century, each panel with a serpentine crest decorated with gilt scrollwork, on a seafoam green ground, the upper panels decorated with scenes of Venice and the lower panels with vases of flowers.
h. 69-1/4", w. 101-1/2" (fully extended)
Condition Report: Attractive screen retaining rich colors throughout. The panels were once attached with small leather straps (now separated). All panels with typical scattered small surface losses, scuffs, craquelure and touchups. The panel with ruins of arches has a 1/2"-1/2"-1/2" zigzag right above the arches; not readily noticeable from the front and does not substantially detract. All of the above consistent with age. The frames are unpainted and lightweight. The reverse panels putty ground decorated with brown scrolls and flora.
