Description: This is a hanging scroll of the Kangxi period of Qing Dynasty, painted in ink and colour on aged silk. The silk base carries profound antique patina. The painting depicts peonies in multiple hues: white, pink, crimson and dark purple blossoms bloom luxuriantly with densely layered petals, rendered with exquisite detail embodying noble grace. Leaves are meticulously painted with clear vein structures, paired with sturdy branches and tiny grass and flowers at the root, full of vitality.
Inscription on the left: *Painted in mid-spring of Gengchen year of Kangxi, at Wugui Studio, Ma Quan from Haiyu*, with seal stamp below. Ma Quan was a renowned female painter of the Qing Dynasty, excelling in meticulous flower-and-bird painting following Song academy style, characterised by elegant colouring and refined brushwork. Old mounting with elegant patterned silk border. Creases present, main painting well preserved. A representative meticulous floral work, symbolising wealth and prosperity.
