Watanabe Shotei (Seitei) was born in 1851 in Edo. He started studies at age sixteen under Kikuchi Yosai (1788–1878) after which he spent a brief time in the studio of the painter and lacquer artist, Shibata Zeshin, who at that time was one of Japan's most renowned painters, lacquer artists and printmakers. Zeshin Shibata was selected to represent Japan at the international world exhibitions in Vienna in 1875, in Philadelphia in 1876 and in Paris in 1878. Watanabe Shotei received the opportunity to accompany Zeshin Shibata in 1878 for the Paris World Exhibition, where he received a silver metal for a painting he submitted to the Paris Exposition. He remained in Paris for three years and became the first Nihonga artist to reside in Europe to study Western painting. When he returned from Europe he became well-known for his sensitive kacho-ga (bird-and-flower) images which utilized Japanese techniques while incorporating some Western sensibilities. Shotei blended Western realism with the delicate colours and washes of the Kikuchi Yosai school, introducing a new approach to kacho-ga. He died in 1918, when he was 67 years old. His works could be seen in many museums worldwide, such as British museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard Art Museum, Roller end: bone. Measurements: Scroll: 196 x 58 cm Picture: 106 x 40,5 cm Very good condition, there are signs of wear due to age and normal use, stains, marks; please, see pictures for actual condition.
