Hanging scroll - Ceramic, Silk - Tazaki Soun (1815-1898) - Very fine "Red and white chrysanthemums" - Signed Sōun 草雲 - including original tomobako - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912) Beautiful composition of red and white chrysanthemums. Tazaki Soun was a japanese-style painter in the late edo - meiji era. Born in the Ashikaga clan's residence in Edo Kanda. He studied under Tani Buncho the Nanga and North Song paintings, and also studied Chinese paintings with Watanabe Kazan. From 1853, he became a painter of the Ashikaga domain, and also served as a feudal retainer of Ashikaga clan. But at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, he was rather involved in national affairs and devoted himself into the movement advocating reverence for the Emperor. After the Meiji Restoration, he focused on painting and led the realm of the literati painting. He won high awards at the World Expo and the National Industrial Exhibition, and there were strong calls for him to move to Tokyo, but he continued to work while living a secluded life in Ashikaga. He became an imperial artist in 1890. His works could be found in Tokyo National Museum, Metropoliten Museum of Art, New York, . . . With signed and sealed tomobako. Roller end: ceramic.
