Hanging scroll painting - Shunsō 春叢 (1751-1835) - Paper - 'Shunsō Oshō sanmen Daikoku zo' 春叢和尚三面大黒像 (Portrait of Three-headed Daikoku by Master Shunsō) - Japan - 1834 (Edo period) Ink on paper, mounting on silk Signature: Shunsō 春叢 (1751-1835) Seals: Shunsō 春叢 and Ryu'en 龍淵 Paper slip on verso inscribed: 'Suisen ? chinzo' 睡仙 ? 珍蔵 (Treasured possession of Suisen) 28. 8 × 96 cm (33. 2 x 176 cm) Dated 1834 (83 years old) (Some folds) "Happiness and Longevity - 10,000 springs" Daikoku is one of seven gods of happiness in Japan. It is said that one Daikoku is already good for happiness and prosperity, so 3 Daikoku in one form is much stronger. This one has a face of Daikoku in the middle, the right has a face of Bishamonten, and the left has a face of Benzaiten. Shunsō was a leader monk of Myōshin-ji temple (Rinzai Sect) in Kyoto. He left several calligraphies and zen-ga with this motif. Probably he prayed for a peaceful happiness for everybody.
