H 127 cm - W 42 cm (H 189 cm - L 54 cm) The turtle is a symbol of longevity. According to a Japanese legend "cranes live 1,000 years, turtles live 10,000 years". Many objects and paintings depict turtles in Japanese art. In this work 75 turtles are depicted, each with a different, sometimes comical expression. It is certainly a highly auspicious scroll painting.
