【Product details】

Experience the allure of Meiji craftsmanship with this exquisite incense container (Kogo) , a repository of beauty and traditional symbolism. The interior and the center of the base boast a Nashiji finish, known for its pear skin-like texture, while the rest of the exterior presents an incredibly fine Nashiji ground.

Adorning the lid is a striking high-relief Maki-e depiction of the Hannya mask, the Hagoromo celestial robe, and a double-bladed axe, each element rich in cultural significance. The Hannya mask, a quintessential element in Noh theatre, represents a vengeful female spirit consumed by jealousy and rage, with its dual expressions of sorrow at the top and fury at the bottom.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.

This incense container is in excellent condition, a testament to the enduring craftsmanship of the Meiji era. It stands not only as a functional piece but also as a collectible that captures the profound narrative and artistry of Japan's traditional performing arts.
