Autograph poem signed by Hans Christian Andersen entitled “Den anden Januar 1859 – Efter en Vandring” (2 January 1859 – after a walk). One page. 10 lines. Annotated by the previous owner. The poem was written on 2 January 1859, when Andersen, as usual, was staying at Basnæs with the melancholic Mrs Scavenius. The New Year of 1858/59 was very mild, and the poem is a tribute to spring: “Spring forth, woodrush! Fresh and sprightly,/ Hang out your woolly mittens, Arrow! / Come, Cuckoo, Lark! Sing, for we have/ Spring on the second of January!”. “The Second of January” bears some similarities to the well-known fairy tale “The Snow Man” (The Snow Man), which he wrote in the same place and at the same time of year, but two years later. Provenance: Auction March 2011, Bruun Rasmussen auction no. 815. Lot no. 194.
