Hans Haffenrichter was born on August 31, 1897, in Würzburg and died on February 22, 1981, in Prien am Chiemsee. After initial training at the Nuremberg Art School, he moved to the State Bauhaus in Weimar in 1921 at the suggestion of art dealer and collector Wilhelm Uhde. There, he studied painting and sculpture until 1924—under instructors such as Oskar Schlemmer—and engaged in experimental theater work in Lothar Schreyer’s stage workshop. His years at the Bauhaus were formative for Haffenrichter’s artistic development. His works from this period combine a clearly structured formal language—characterized in part by a Constructivist reduction of form—with an interest in the human figure, movement, and spatial effects. His figurative compositions, drawings, pastels, prints, and sculptures, in particular, reflect an interplay of influences: the Bauhaus, New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), Expressionist formal condensation, and contemporary stage art. A depiction of a dancer, dated 1923, exemplifies his interest in the body, rhythm, and the figure in motion. Following a period of study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Haffenrichter directed the "Der Weg" art school in Berlin from 1927 to 1931. He subsequently held various professorships and teaching positions, including at the Elbing Pedagogical Academy and, after 1945, at the Wiesbaden School of Applied Arts (Werkkunstschule). From 1961 onwards, the artist lived in Hittenkirchen am Chiemsee; his late work encompasses not only figurative pieces but also landscapes and gouaches distinguished by their nuanced use of color. In this way, Haffenrichter’s multifaceted body of work—spanning more than six decades—bridges Bauhaus Modernism, art education, and the artistic milieu of the Chiemsee region.
