Condition Report:
There is usual wear along the outer edges. Extremely close inspection reveals superficial faint cracks along the edges and some tiny light scattered media accretions. There is no evidence of retouching under ultraviolet light examination. This work is in overall very good condition.

Born in 1904, Hans Hartung is a Franco-German artist known for his abstract works. The latter are filled with dynamic brushstrokes that reveal the gestures of their creator.
This painting, produced in 1986, marks a turning point in the artist's career. After having experienced a stroke that binds him to a wheelchair, Hartung enters a state of frenzy that leads him to produce emotionally charged paintings. The red and purple motifs that invade the composition are reminiscent of bloodstains. Having endured the war as a legionnaire as well as a fugitive, the artist combines his battle memories and his present suffering to produce a work that is no less than the reflection of his intimate wounds. Despite his disability, the artist never ceases to explore the different aspects of movement. Through his dazzling sprays of color, Hartung expresses the free and infinite gestures that he is no longer able to perform. Despite the fact that it was created during a period of vulnerability and physical weakness, the painting embodies life in its most fervent form.

Né en 1904, Hans Hartung est un artiste franco-allemand réputé pour ses œuvres abstraites. Ces dernières sont parsemées de coups de pinceau dynamiques laissant entrevoir les gestes de leur créateur.
Cette œuvre réalisée en 1986 marque un point culminant dans la carrière de l’artiste. Suite à une crise cardiaque qui le condamne à l’immobilité, Hartung plonge dans un état de frénésie qui le conduit à produire des peintures fortes d’émotions. Les taches rouges et violettes qui envahissent la composition font songer aux traces d’un combat sanglant. Légionnaire puis fugitif, l’artiste conjugue ses souvenirs de guerre et sa souffrance actuelle afin d’aboutir à une œuvre qui n’est autre que le reflet de ses blessures intimes. En dépit de sa paralysie, l’artiste n’a de cesse d’explorer les différents aspects du mouvement. A travers ses jets de couleurs fulgurants, Hartung exprime la liberté. Cette œuvre réalisée durant une période de vulnérabilité et de faiblesse physique, incarne pourtant la vie dans toute son intensité.
