LITERATURE
Sydney Ure Smith, 'The Art of Hans Heysen', Art in Australia (Special Issue), Angus and Robertson Sydney, pl. XXIX (illus.)

'In her memoirs of life at The Cedars, the Heysen home, Sue Heysen recalls the inspiration for the turkey pictures, of which The Promenade is, along with Josephine and her Bronzewings, 1918, and Bronzewings and Saplings, 1921 (now in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia), the most famous.

'There was a full-length glass pane in the old laundry doorway. Heysen used to watch the turkeys come along to the door, see their own reflection and start preening themselves. They strutted about and fluffed up their feathers. Heysen saw his opportunity, took his pencils and paper and sat inside the laundry drawing birds while they admired their handsome reflections from the outside.'

An oil painting of the same name, dating from 1953 and drawing substantially on the content of this work, is in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
