This small work is a later copy of a portrait by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98-1543), which is kept in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. The background and inscriptions of the original work were both subsequently ammended, erroneously giving the doctor's age as 88 years old. He was, in fact, only 73 when Holbein painted him in a group portrait of Henry VIII's doctors and in an individual portrait. This small copy was probably made in the 17th or 18th century and includes the complete inscription: "AETATIS SVE 88".
