Hans Rottenhammer - The Assumption of the Virgin

[ translate ]

Hans Rottenhammer

The Assumption of the Virgin

Oil on copper. 32.6 x 24.6 cm.

The composition of the present work corresponds to a painting by Hans Rottenhammer in the Mittelrheinmuseum in Koblenz, which H. Schlichtenmaier described as a combination of the theme of the Queen of Heaven, Maria Immaculata and the Virgin of the Apocalypse.
As with other compositions by Rottenhammer, it can be proven by copies that this pictorial idea was also known in Antwerp. Fusenig mentions, for example, a version that can be ascribed to Hendrik van Balen and also a version "en grisaille" that was recorded in the estate of van Balen's wife in 1638. There it was described as follows: "A sketch of an Ascension by Rottenhammer in black and white" (Fusenig, op. cit., note 80).
