Hans Staudacher was an Austrian artist of the 20th century and is considered the most important representative of abstract painting as well as a co-founder of Austrian Lyrical Informel. A self-taught artist from St. Urban on Lake Ossiach, he began early with drawings, landscape watercolors, and portraits; from 1948 he participated in exhibitions and moved to Vienna in 1950. In 1954 and 1962, he traveled for extended periods to Paris, where influences of Tachism and Action Painting shaped his gestural painting style. In 1956, he represented Austria at the Venice Biennale, and in 1976 he was awarded the title of professor. A member of the Vienna Secession, Forum Stadtpark Graz, and the Carinthian Art Association, he, along with Josef Mikl, Wolfgang Hollegha, Markus Prachensky, Maria Lassnig, Cornelius Kolig, and Gotthard Muhr, shaped postwar abstraction. Works in the Albertina Graphic Collection, the Museum of Art Cincinnati, and collections worldwide; exhibitions at the Art Club. Staudacher's expressive oeuvre combines Tachisme and Abstract Expressionism with spontaneous gesture, inspired by Wols, Pierre Soulages, Antonio Saura, Henri Michaux, Asger Jorn, Rolf Iseli, Hans Hartung, Jean Fautrier, and Georges Mathieu—as well as fellow countrymen such as Arnulf Rainer and Arnold Clementschitsch.
