Hans Thoma - Mother and Child (Study for or based on ‘Black Forest Garden’)
Hans Thoma
Mother and Child (Study for or based on ‘Black Forest Garden’)
Oil on hardboard. 53.5 x 69.5 cm.
Monogrammed and dated lower left: hTh 99.
Hans Thoma repeatedly explored the motif of mother and child in a domestic garden, particularly during the 1870s and 1880s. He expanded on his well-known 1871 painting ‘Unter dem Flieder’ (Under the Lilac), now in the Städel, in his 1873 work ‘Schwarzwaldgarten’ (Black Forest Garden), adding a scenic backdrop featuring a sky glowing red at dusk over a mountain range. This work is possibly a preliminary study for the 1873 painting, which the artist – having finally achieved his breakthrough around 1899 – presumably signed and dated retrospectively.
Provenance
From the estate of Prof. Walter Goetz (note on the reverse). – Private collection, Germany.
