Initialed "HWS" lower right, inscribed "No. 7" in red on the reverse and "Western Story" on a gummed label on the back of the frame.
Oil on heavy pressed paperboard, 27 x 22 1/8 in. (68.5 x 56.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Minor surface grime.

N.B. A prolific illustration artist, Harold Winfield Scott specialized in images for stories about sports and the American West. He characterized himself as, "… a whirlwind painter of rootin' tootin' cowboys. Art directors liked the spirit I got into all my paintings. I have a lot of spirit myself and that's why I always worked so hard. I never knew Christmas. I'd be doing two or three of these things a week sometimes, and sometimes till late at night. At 2 a.m. I'd scratch out a face that wasn't right, go to bed, and then get up and start all over again." (1) Scott created this work as an illustration for the June 1950 issue of Big-Book Western Magazine, a pulp fiction publication that ran from 1933 to 1954.
