Harry E. Westlund (American, born 1941), Untitled, 1970 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Harry E. Westlund (American, born 1941) is an artist and master lithographic printer whose career is closely associated with Tamarind during the early 1970s. As a collaborative printer, he worked with artists including Charles White and R. C. Gorman. Westlund also produced his own abstract prints, which favor broad black fields interrupted by diffused color and isolated forms. His lithographs are held by the National Gallery of Art and the Norton Simon Museum.

Untitled, 1970, color lithograph from aluminum in black and blended green and orange on buff Arches paper. Broad, irregular fields of black surround a largely open central area mottled with washes, splatters, and granular lithographic textures. Two softly blended green forms occupy the upper left, while a compact orange-red form appears near the upper right. Published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. Inscribed in white crayon along the lower edge “HWestlund ’70” and “Tam Imp,” with the Tamarind and Westlund blindstamps; the verso is inscribed in graphite “2877.” “Tam Imp” identifies this example as a Tamarind impression retained outside the regular numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 30 x 22 inches. The sheet shows light overall toning and minor handling, with two remnants of old mounting tape along the upper verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
