Initialed and dated "© HJ. 59" on the figure's left leg, numbered "28." on the right leg, titled on a presentation plaque.
Bronze with brown/green patina, height 5 3/4 in. (14.5 cm), on a triangular marble plinth.
Condition: Dust and dirt to interstices.

Provenance: The collection of Joseph Thomas Alvarez III, California.

N.B. Harry Jackson believed that the whole history of the cowboy lived through his songs. This figure from the late 1950s dates to the period of Jackson's particular interest in music and dance subjects. (See Lot 270, Peon Dancers.) Long Ballad was Jackson's first sculpture directly related to music and was created in conjunction with the release of his Folkways album "Harry Jackson, the Cowboy: His Songs, Ballads and Brag Talk."
