Harry Truman TLS as Newly Elected Senator With Angry Postscript, "They transferred me out of the 7th Corps Area"
TLS
A typed letter from newly-elected Senator Harry Truman to his friend and legal advisor Rufus Burrus (1900-1990). 1p on Senate letterhead, measuring 8" x 10.5", Washington, D.C., February 14, 1935. Signed at conclusion as "Harry S. Truman", he makes a donation to the Reserve Officers Club (ROC) and expresses anger in the postscript about being transferred out of the 7th Corps Area. Exhibits flattened letter folds and light creasing throughout, with isolated paperclip indentation in the upper left. Otherwise, near fine.
From The Doug Wertman Collection.
Truman's postscript reads in full:
"How goes the 'war'? I hope you are happy and getting along as well as you wish. Remember me to Mrs. Burrus. They transferred me out of the 7th Corps area which makes me mad."
After taking his Senate seat in January 1935, the army was required to relieve Truman of his reserve command, and instead put him on "general assignment." This move greatly irritated Truman, who later claimed that he was not consulted or notified that the change was taking place. A week before this letter to Burrus on February 8, Truman received word from Major General Stuart Heintzelman that "the importance of your National Defense duties as Senator has led the War Department to transfer your assignment from the Corps Area…." Indeed, the present contribution he made to the ROC Victory Dinner undoubtedly stung after being stripped of command.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
