Harry Truman Thanks NASA Administrator James Webb For a Copy of Their First "Administrative History"
TLS

A significant typed letter from Harry Truman to his former cabinet member and then-NASA Administrator James Webb. 1p on personal letterhead, measuring 7.25" x 10.5", Independence, MO, July 22, 1966. Signed at conclusion as "Harry S. Truman", the former President thanks Webb for sending him a copy of the organization's first administrative history. Stamped on the verso by NASA's Office of the Administrator. Accompanied by its original air mail envelope. Various staple holes present in the letter's upper left edge, with corresponding punctures to the right side of envelope. Expected handling wear and negligible surface marks. Otherwise, very good.

In full:

"Thank you for your good letter of July 15th, and the book 'An Administrative History of NASA 1958-1963'.
I appreciate most highly your thoughtfulness in remembering me with a copy of the book and am most grateful for the kind inscription on the flyleaf.
I hope everything is going well with you and am sure it is."

Together with an unsigned carbon of Webb's letter to Truman, reading in part:

"Because of the tremendous support you gave to the building of the institution of the Presidency, and because the Truman Library will receive my own papers relating to the five years covered in NASA's first historical volume, 'An Administrative History of NASA from 1958 to 1963,' I wanted you to have this volume. From the Foreword, you will see that we still have much to learn but are still working within the principles which you followed so successfully…."

James Edwin Webb (1906-1992) served as the second administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968, beginning his tenure at the start of the Kennedy administration and through to the end of the Johnson administration. He thus oversaw each of the first crewed missions throughout the Mercury and Gemini programs, up until days before the launch of the first Apollo mission. In his earlier political career, Webb served as Truman's Budget Director from 1946 to 1949.
