Harry & Bess Truman Signed White House Place Card
Signed card
An official White House place card originally belonging to Mrs. Steelman, ostensibly the wife of Assistant to the President John Steelman. 1p, measuring 4.25" x 2.5", [Washington, DC], May 7, 1946. Signed by the President and First Lady as "Harry S. Truman" (top recto) and "Bess W. Truman" (verso, 4th from top), respectively, with additional signatures from 20 White House staff members and their wives. This card, bearing a gold embossed presidential seal, evidently came from a dinner held the night before Truman's 62nd birthday of May 8. Exhibits light soiling and edge wear throughout, with areas of scatted ink marks. Isolated smudging to the signature of Margery Clifford. Otherwise, very good.
From The Doug Wertman Collection.
Signers include:
Recto (top to bottom): Harry Truman; Dorothea Connelly, wife of Matt Connelly; William Leahy, military chief of staff to FDR and Truman; James K. Vardaman, Federal Reserve Board member; Mary Allen, wife of George Allen; Margery K. Clifford, wife of Clark Clifford; and Wallace Graham, personal physician to the President.
Verso (top to bottom): William D. Hassett, correspondence secretary; Florence G. Ross, wife of Charles Ross; Harry Vaughn, military aide to the President; Bess Truman; Matt Connelly, appointments secretary; Evelyn Snyder, wife of John Snyder; Charles G.
