Portrait of Michael Collins

signé Hazel Lavery, daté 1922 and inscrit M.C. (en bas à droit)
crayon et lavis d'encre sur papier

Condition Report:
The sheet is laid down on to a supportive backing board. The lower edge is slightly unevenly cut. The left edge has suffered a slight loss, approximately 10cm long, not visible in the present mount. There is some paper skimming to the left, right and lower edges. There is a small paper accretion at the centre of the upper edge. The wash is slightly discoloured throughout. There are some spots of foxing at the lower edge. There is a very faint stain in the lower left quadrant. The sheet is slightly time stained. The work is held behind glass in a simple gilded wooden frame within a mount.

Catalogue Note:
Hazel Lavery's cultural significance cannot be overstated. Despite living in Ireland for only 24 years her image was to be found on Irish banknotes for most of the twentieth century. The wife of famed artist, John Lavery, she was herself an accomplished artist as the present work is testament to. She was a famous beauty and became a celebrated society figure, corresponding with many of the most famous cultural figures of the early twentieth century, including Winston Churchill and W.B. Yeats.

The present work is a portrait of Michael Collins, the iconic Irish revolutionary and the Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State, from January 1922 until his assassination in August of the same year. This drawing dates from this same period which is hugely significant in its own right but this is heightened by the rumoured nature of the relationship between artist and sitter. Although this has never been proven there were persistent rumours of an affair between the two. Collins was an extraordinarily bright and capable man and his influence extended internationally. Despite his remarkable accomplishment he was a famously modest man, whose selflessness in pursuit of Irish independence ultimately cost him his life.
