Headrest - Hardwood - headrest - Yaka - Congo DRC
Superb anthropo-zoomorphic neckrest typical of the Yaka ethnic group. Made of hard wood (ebony?) With a dark patina, the sculpture represents a quadruped animal with a human head. The concave plate rests on a cylindrical pillar rising from the back of the animal. The theme of the animal-man is recurrent in mythology and Yaka sculpture, in particular in headrests. Cf FALGAYRETTES C. , Supports of dreams, Paris, Fondation Dapper, 1989, pp. 66 and 110.
