Hefty Luristan Bronze Mace Head

Ancient Near East, the Levant, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A sturdy, cast-bronze mace head of a relatively phallic form with a cylindrical socketing shaft and a lengthy head lined with 9 rows of protruding conical spikes. Mace heads like this were secured to the ends of wooden handles and used to great and devastating efficiency on ancient battlefields. Layers of brown and green patina envelop this weapon and imbue it with an attractive presentation. Size: 6.9" L x 1.625" W (17.5 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, acquired 1990s from Artemission, London, England
