BIOGRAPHY:
Heinrich Sperling was a German painter best known for his realistic depictions of animals, most often dogs. Portraying them in both naturalistic and comedic settings, the artist frequently opted to show several animals at once, focusing on their interactions and implied relationships. Many of Sperling's paintings were commissioned portraits of the aristocracy's dogs, though he did occasionally depict the human subject'as seen in Rittmeister von Sydow auf seinem Rennpferde Zietenhusar (1901). Born on March 23, 1844 in Warnkenhagen, Germany, he went on to study painting under fellow German artists Carl Constantin Steffeck and Paul Friedrich Meyerheim, who also specialized in highly detailed animal portraits. Sperling died on June 20, 1924 in Berlin, Germany.
