Prometheus stands next to the human figure that he himself created from mud and gives him fire in the form of a torch. Different animals around the two men (elephant, lion, monkey, dog, cow, etc.) . Two lines of Latin text underneath the scene. This print is part of a series of 52 prints that depict stories from Ovid's Metamorphoses. This series is divided into three numbered series: two of 20 prints and one of 12 prints. This print belongs to the first series.
Etching and engraving by the studio from and after a design by Hendrick Goltzius (Brüggen, 1558 - Haarlem, 1617) . Originally published in Haarlem in 1589. Here in a slightly later, 17th century edition.
