Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617)- Thomassin Philippe (1562-1622) - Sancta Fides

[ translate ]

Magnificent very rare original engraving,
Made on laid paper with a lily-shaped watermark with a double circle around it, beautiful light and dark in an excellent state of preservation

The print is part of a complete series of 14 plates plus frontispiece, representing the cardinal and theological virtues and the seven deadly sins, and is included in the volume marked D 22/305 and entitled: "Virtutes et, vitia bis sep tem una praemiis et poenis". The author of these engravings is Philippe T homassin, as we know from an inscription on the title page - and a dedication, by Thomassin to a certain Serafino Olivario. Thomassin is a French engraver, who moved to Rome in 1585, where he took up the profession of printer. Born in Troyes in 1562, his career probably did not begin until 1580, and ended around 1622, the year of his death. Since we do not know the date on which the prints were engraved, we must consider the entire period of Thomassin's activity.
