A very rare copper engraving of the Last Supper by Hendrik Hondius the Elder (1573–1650) after Peter de Witte. Christ and his disciples around a rectangular table. John with his head on Christ's shoulder. Judas, in the center in front, with a money pouch on his belt, a symbol of his betrayal. The print has a Latin caption with a verse from the Bible (Luke 22) . Hendrik Hondius I, Henricus Hondius I or Hendrik Hondius the Elder (Latinised form of 'Hendrik de Hondt', first name also spelled: 'Hendrick') (1573–1650) , was a Flemish-born and trained engraver, cartographer and publisher who settled in the Dutch Republic in 1597. One of the most important publications of Hondius was the work Pictorum aliquot celebrium praecipue Germaniae inferioris Effigies (Effigies of some celebrated painters, chiefly of Lower Germany) of 1610, which was a collection of 69 portraits of mainly Netherlandish artists. The engraving is attached to the passe-partout background on the left corner. The left corner of the engraving had been torn in the past, this had been restored.
