Henri Cleenewerck, Belgian 1818-1901- A winter landscape with skaters on a frozen river; oil on canvas, signed (lower right), 53.2 x 71 cm. Provenance: With Williams & Son, London, 1967 [no.16958].; Private Collection, UK. Note: Born to French parents in Watou, Belgium, Cleenewerck began his artistic studies in the art academies of Lepe and Poperinge before moving to America in 1854. He is recorded as working in Georgia in 1860, and for a 5 year period during the 1860s based himself in Havana, Cuba, where he received multiple commissions from distinguished colonial families living on the island. Many of his most accomplished and renowned paintings were completed during and after this period in Havana. Such compositions depicted intriguing and untouched tropical landscapes such as the Canimar River and San Antonio de los Banos, and were fascinating to European viewers. In 1868 Cleenewerck moved back to Europe, where he established a studio and frequently exhibited at salons. He went on to travel extensively between America and Europe until his death in 1901. A number of Cleenewerck’s paintings, including the present work, depict winter landscapes in and around Belgium, most likely to have been completed before he first moved to America.
