Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau was a French physicist, botanist and agronomist. Member from 1738 of the Royal Academy of Sciences, of which he was elected president on three occasions, he left an important work as a scientific writer in fields as varied as the construction and service of ships, fishing, cultivation and conservation of wheat, forest management. Appointed inspector general of the navy in 1739, he created a maritime school in 1741, which in 1765 became the School of Engineers-Builders.
