These works were created by the artist with paper colored in gouache, cut with scissors and pasted. They are shown here with drawings made at the same time or in the previous period. Matisse composed the cover especially for this volume. These lithographic plates were printed under his direction in 1954.
The printing of the color lithographs by Mourlot Frères and that of the photogravure reproductions and typography by the master printers Draeger Frères was completed in Paris on July 28, 1958.
