[ translate ]

Henri Emile Benoit Matisse (French, 1869-1954) Attributed: Portrait of a Woman. Crayon on paper, signed lower right, undated, framed. This item is accompanied with a letter of appraisal from Chas A. Grieder Antique and Fine Art Services.

Matisse was known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is accepted as one of the most influential modern painters and crowned as the leader of Fauvism, a 20th century movement that favored a painterly style and bold, expressive use of color over the representational or naturalistic values of the Impressionist movement before.
