Catalogue Note:
Initiated in 1955, the mescalinien works result from an almost scientific research focused on the effects of hallucinogenic substances on thoughts and perceptions. The fear of being under the influence of a foreign body is deeply felt throughout this series. The sense of alienation induced by the consumption of drugs is at the heart of this body of work, which marks a turning point in the artist's pictorial approach. If the works pertaining to this series constitute traces of these hallucinatory experiences, the latter are also recounted in the artist's writings, notably in Les Grandes Epreuves de l'esprit, L'infini turbulent, Paix dans les bruissements and Connaissance par les gouffres.

The works belonging to this series are crossed by undetectable patterns that reflect the artist's inner visions. Michaux provides insights on his approach "Instead of a vision excluding another, I would have wanted to draw the moments that, end to end, constitute life, to give to see the inner phase, the phase without words, the sinuous string that unfolds indefinitely, and in the intimate accompanies all that is presented from outside as from within. Initiées en 1955, les œuvres mescaliniennes constituent le fruit d’une recherche presque scientifique portant sur l’impact des substances hallucinogènes sur la pensée et sur la perception. L’angoisse d’être sous l’emprise d’une instance étrangère se fait profondément ressentir au fil de cette série. Le sentiment d’alinéation qu’induit la consommation de drogues est au cœur de ce corpus d’œuvres qui marque un tournant dans l’univers pictural de l’artiste. Si les œuvres qui en sont issues constituent les traces de ces expériences hallucinatoires, ces dernières sont également relatées dans les écrits de l’artiste dont notamment Les Grandes Epreuves de l’esprit, L’infini turbulent, Paix dans les bruissements et Connaissance par les gouffres.

Les œuvres appartenant à cette série sont traversées par des motifs indécelables qui constituent le reflet des visions intérieures de l’artiste. Ce dernier fait part de son approche « Au lieu d’une vision à l’exclusion d’une autre, j’eusse voulu dessiner les moments qui, bout à bout, font la vie, donner à voir la phase intérieure, la phase sans mots, corde qui indéfiniment se déroule sinueuse, et, dans l’intime accompagne tout ce qui se présente du dehors comme du dedans. » (Henri Michaux, Henri Michaux musée national d’art moderne, 12 février – 4 avril 1951, p.22).
