Henri Tréhard (19th century)

[ translate ]

Titel:
Henri Tréhard (19th century)

Omschrijving:
Period'La cruche cassée', late 19th century, FranceDescriptionCarved white marble, the girl holding a broken jug, the right little finger held to the mouth, sitting on a pedestal, signed ‘H. Tréhard’ to the left side of the pedestal. The subject of a girl holding a broken vessel – usually symbolizing lost innocence – was already taken up by artists in the 18th century, as by Jean-Baptiste Greuze with his painting La cruche cassée (The broken pitcher) from 1771. Examples by Tréhard’s contemporaries include a painting by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) and a sculpture by Joseph Carlier (1849-1927). Whereas Tréhard has remained a rather obscure sculptor, the sparse references to his work actually point us to the most famous sculptor France has ever produced, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). For a certain period of time, Tréhard worked for Rodin as his ‘praticien’ (sculptor’s assistant), and he was actually one of a larger group of assistants surrounding the master, such as Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) and Ernest Nivet (1871-1948).DimensionsH 93 cm
