Henry Andrews, British 1794-1868- The Dance; oil on canvas, signed 'H Andrews' (lower left), 70 x 98 cm. Provenance: Private Collection. Note: Andrews often returned to the theme of the ‘fête galante’, and was clearly heavily influenced by the work of 18th-century French Rococo painters including François Boucher (1703-1770) and Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806). Such scenes, including the present work, are frequently set in an idyllic, arcadian landscape, creating a veritable sense of escapism from viewers’ everyday life.
