[ translate ]

Henry Aston Model 1842 U.S. Dragoon pistol, stamped on gun lock, and “MIDDTN CONN 1851” behind hammer. Working action. This is an original, U.S. Model 1842 Pistol made by Henry Aston of Middletown, Connecticut. It is a .54 caliber, smooth bored, percussion pistol with an 8-1/2" round barrel. It uses a steel ramrod, permanently attached by a swivel. Aston made 24,000 of these between 1846 and 1850. They were primarily intended as horse pistols for cavalry use. Troopers were issued a pair which rode in a double holster. This hung over the pommel of the saddle with a pistol on each side. Tin tubes in each covered holster carried prepared paper cartridges for the guns. This pistol is in very good to fine condition. The barrel has been cleaned to armory bright and has redeveloped a gray patina. There are fine pits on the barrel. There is heavier pitting around the bolster from cap splash. The barrel markings remain clear. The lock plate and hammer have a smooth dark brown patina that almost looks blue on some areas of the hammer. The brass mountings have a golden bronze patina. The mechanics work well.
