At the Associated Press in the 1930s and 1940s he created editorial cartoons that were syndicated to newspapers throughout the United States. In 1949 he joined the staff of the Omaha World Herald (Nebraska) as editorial cartoonist and remained in that position to retirement in 1971. Currency inflation had been encouraged under the New Deal as a method of stimulating the American economy in the Great Depression; more and cheaper dollars meant Americans had more money to spend so demand would rise as would production to meet it. However, during the war years price inflation became a major problem as goods were needed for the war effort, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved to bring it under control. And Don't Spare the Salt! depicts FDR chasing the "High Cost of Living" with a "Farm Prices and Wage Stabilization Plan" in hand. It was created while Mr. Barrow was at the Associated Press and appeared in many newspapers across the United States in August, 1942. From the late-1920s to the early-1960s the editorial cartoons of John Churchill Chase appeared in New Orleans, Louisiana newspapers. After study at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts he initially worked at the Chicago Tribune, yet by 1927 he returned to his native New Orleans where his work was published in several newspapers. He was the creator of syndicated U.S. history-themed comic strips and a local historian. Mr. Chase spent many years with the States-Item, and this original was published in that newspaper in early 1943. "Yesterday" Germany's Adolf Hitler made plans with Italy's Benito Mussolini and the world quaked, "and Today" the men in command were President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British P.M. Winston Churchill and the two fascist leaders, along with Japan's Tojo, had reason to fret.
