A certification of service signed by Founding Father Major General Henry Knox (1750-1806). Also signed by the captain of the company, Thomas Patten, the document certifies that Stephen Savage "has served the United States from the 7th of September 1777 until this date and is now in actual service." This lot includes Savage's pay receipt for "Twenty three pounds ten shillings & 6".

Stephen Savage (alt. Stephin), originally enlisted in Capt. Jared Shepard's Co., in Col. Thomas Belding's Regiment, Regiment of Connecticut Militia as a private by April 1777, and by September was serving in Col. Jeduthan Baldwin's Regiment of Artificers (CT), before ending the war as a private in Capt. Thomas Patten's Company of Artillery Artificers.

Henry Knox was a senior general of the Continental Army and served as chief of artillery in most of Washington's campaigns. Following the war, he oversaw the War Department and became the new nation's first Secretary of War.
