Henry Major (HungarianxAmerican, 1889-1948) Caricatures of C. M. Hay, Franklin Roosevelt and Louis G. Stevenson, circa 1920 Pencil on paper 7 x 11 inches (17.8 x 27.9 cm) (image) Each image signed in lower region: Major Henry Major was born in Hungary and moved to the United States as an established caricaturist in Vienna and London. He became well known throughout the 1920s for traveling the country to draw caricatures of local politicians, business leaders, and actors. His later years were devoted to painting. Three of his original drawings depict "C. M. Hay of Missouri," "F. Roosevelt" and "Louis G. Stevenson of Illinois;" each is named below the image. Mr. Hay was a prominent St. Louis attorney, politician, prohibitionist and leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Lewis G. Stevenson was an Illinois politician, a Democratic Party leader who served as Secretary of State from 1914 to 1917. The portrait of Franklin Delano Roosevelt was likely drawn circa 1920 when, as the young Assistant Secretary of the Navy, he was chosen as the Democratic Party candidate for Vice President to run alongside Ohio Governor James M. Cox. The three drawings were made on three separate sheets of paper that have been layered to one another on the back. The remnant of what might be a publication order is on the back of the Stevenson drawing. HID03101062020 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.comxTexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
