Henry Scott TUKE (British 1858-1929) Return from Fishing (preparatory sketch), Watercolour, Signed with

initials and dated 1904 lower left, 8" x 5" (20cm x 13cm) Note: The period during which this work was completed (1904) is covered by one Tuke's few remaining diary's 1899-1905. Tuke was in Europe for the first seven months of 1904. The diary highlights an artist under pressure to produce work for the 1905 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and experiencing problems with models. The model for this work is Charlie Mitchell. Charlie worked as Tuke's boatman, maintaining his vessels, rowing Tuke to hard to reach locations and crewed on his racing yacht. As such he was always on hand and Tuke records in his diary that he exclusively used Charlie for modelling from 11th September to the end if the year. The work offered is clearly a study for 'Return from Fishing', a work only completed 1907and sold to Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, a close friend and supporter of Tuke. The final completed work appeared on the open market for the first time in 1980, offered by Sothey's.
