Henryk Gotlib, British/Polish 1890-1966 - Tellaro (Italy), c.1960s; pencil on paper, signed lower right 'Gotlib', 33 x 23.5 cm (ARR) Provenance: Boundary Gallery, London (label attached to the reverse of the frame) Note: Gotlib was a key member of the Formist movement in Poland, which rejected the seemingly restrictive standards of Realism, still very much dominant in early twentieth-century Polish art, in favour of an expressionism which was heavily influenced by figures such as Egon Schiele and Max Beckmann. The looser, more fluid application of paint which defined GotlibÕs best works are strikingly evident in this piece. Works by Gotlib are in a number of prominent collections, including those of the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, and the Courtauld Gallery in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, among others.
