[Herberstein, Sigismund von, & al.] Rerum Moscoviticarum auctores varii unum in corpus nunc primum congesti, 4 unnumbered leaves of plates (3 double page woodcut maps of Russia & 1 folded genealogical table), illustrations depicting a buffalo, the Russian army with weapons and horses, a scene of sleighing and skiing on ice and a portrait of the Grand Duke of Muscovy, another genealogical table, paper flaw to R, repair to lower corner of title, some browning throughout, occasional spotting or foxing, light waterstaining, armorial bookplate of Charles W.G. Howard, contemporary calf, with crowned initials HL on boards, re-backed, a.e.r., rubbed, [Graesse, VI, 334; Adams M 627], folio, Andreas Wevhelius, Frankfurt, 1600. *** In the 1510s and 1520s, the historian Sigismund von Herberstein (1486-1566), a native of Germany, made two diplomatic trips to Russia on behalf of the Holy Roman Empire. He brought with him valuable descriptions of the country and the customs of its inhabitants. First published in Vienna in 1549, the book had considerable success and was translated and reissued many times. In addition to the text of Herberstein, this edition contains works by other authors describing this vast country: ‘Ioannis Basilidis Magni Moscoviae Ducis Vita’, by Paolo Oderbornio, ‘Historia belli Livonici’ by Tilmann Breydenbach, ‘Regii de bello Moscovitico commentariorum libri VI’, by Reinhold Heidenstein, etc. Provenance.
