Herbert Hoover ALS to Future Atomic Energy Commission Chair, Lewis Strauss
ALS

A lengthy autograph letter from Herbert Hoover to his confidante and former administrative assistant Lewis Strauss (1896-1974) and his wife, Alice Hanauer. 2pp on personal letterhead, 7.25" x 10.5", Christmas day, 1951. Signed in full, "Herbert Hoover", in the lower right of page 2, the entire letter being executed in festive green pen. Within, Hoover jokes about not being able to find a suitable Christmas present, and settles on a handwritten sentiment instead. Light, even toning and handling creases present, with areas of scattered soiling. Else, near fine.

In full:

"My dear Lewis and Alice
The thirty four years of devoted friendship you have given me is a phenomenon in human relations. I have searched and sent my agent over the town looking for some sort of gimmick that might mark the occasion but you already have a stock of such furniture. I contemplated writing (I mean dictating) a typewritten document on the subject, but you already have files of them.
All which seems a futile method of expressing the deeper sentiments which this requires. I therefore decided to send the warmer expression of a handwritten letter of which Lewis knows I have written very few in all these years because they impose much labor in translation. But Lewis knows how to read my scribbles.
So this is just to say that I deeply appreciate all these years of devotion and that I hold myself obligated for this such a blessing. And also this is to wish you a happier year and more contentment than recent times have provided.
Affectionately,
Herbert Hoover"

Strauss and Hoover became acquainted during the First World War, when the former was appointed an assistant to the Commission for Relief in Belgium. He later campaigned for Hoover's presidential nomination in the elections of 1920 and 1928, serving as a member of the Republican National Committee from Virginia. Later in 1946, Strauss was named by President Truman as one of the first five Atomic Energy Commissioners, eventually serving as its Chair from 1953 to 1958. In this role, he became a major figure in the development of nuclear weapons and energy after World War II.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
