Hoover writes during the summer of his 1928 Presidential Campaign, to good friend and Republic National Committee Treasurer, Jeremiah Milbank. His letter, which references Roosevelt’s strategy for successful public addresses, in full, “I have your good letter of September 5th inviting me to have dinner with you on October 17th. I have found that in order to give the best I can offer in public addresses I need an hour’s rest or so before such occasions and I have, therefore, adopted Roosevelt’s old plan of dining alone in my hotel. I hope this will be sufficient justification for my refusing so fine a pleasure as you suggest on this occasion.”
