Herbert Hoover Typed Letter Signed to Saturday Evening Post Editor George H. Lorimer
A typed letter signed by Herbert Hoover on personal "HERBERT HOOVER" letterhead, Stanford University, California, November 7, 1928, to "Mr. George H. Lorimer, The Saturday Evening Post, Philadelphia, Pa." Fully transcribed: "My dear Lorimer: I am grateful for your message. It gives me an opportunity to make part acknowledgment of my appreciation for the friendship which you have shown to me over these many years. I do not believe there was any agency in the country more powerful in its support than yours has been. I hope I shall have the pleasure of seeing you later on in the year. Yours faithfully, / Herbert Hoover." Initialed at lower left: "HH MM." November 7, 1928 was Election Day: the day Herbert Hoover defeated Al Smith to become the thirty first President of the United States. Written from Stanford University in California, where Hoover awaited returns, this letter acknowledges the sustained editorial support of George Horace Lorimer (1867 to 1937), the towering editor of the Saturday Evening Post for nearly four decades, who steered America's most widely circulated magazine with a readership exceeding three million. Hoover's characterization of the Post as "the most powerful agency" in his support was historically defensible; Lorimer's publication had championed Hoover's rise from Commerce Secretary through the 1928 campaign with consistent enthusiasm. The election day date gives the letter its particular atmosphere: a note of genuine gratitude committed to paper precisely as the votes were being counted that would confirm Hoover's destiny. TLS: one page, typed on Herbert Hoover personal letterhead, signed in dark ink "Herbert Hoover"; approximately 8.5 x 11 inches; November 7, 1928; addressed to George H. Lorimer, The Saturday Evening Post, Philadelphia; "HH MM" initials at lower left; light fold lines, very good condition. This item will be accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from One of a Kind Collectibles.
