Herbert Johnson (American, 1878-1946) The Patien
Herbert Johnson (American, 1878-1946) The Patient Is Getting Impatient, Saturday Evening Post cartoon, circa 1940 India ink, pencil, and watercolor on heavyweight paper 16 x 14 inches (40.6 x 35.6 cm) (image) Signed lower left: Herbert Johnson For 30+ years Herbert Johnson contributed cartoons, illustrations and cover art to The Saturday Evening Post, one of America's premier magazines of the 20th century. Following work in a variety of jobs, Johnson moved to New York City early in the century and then on to Philadelphia, successfully placing cartoons in a number of publications before making The Saturday Evening Post his primary outlet. This lively original was published in The Saturday Evening Post, likely in 1940 or 1941. President Franklin D. Roosevelt is the chief surgeon in the "National Operating Room" wherein lies Uncle Sam, the patient who requires the attention of his doctors and nurses. Only Congress seems to notice him while the others, including the President, cluster about the radio listening to the latest news of "European Power Politics." The reference is certainly to the pressing need to attend to America's defenses as the world plunged into another world war.
