Herds of Bisons on the upper Missouri

[ translate ]

BODMER, Karl (1809-1893).
Herds of Bisons on the upper Missouri, Tab., 40 (State 1).
Aquatint engraving with original hand color.
From: "Travels in the Interior of North America".
Paris, London, & Coblenz, 1839-1843.
13" x 16 1/2" sheet.
No Blindstamp.

Nearing the end of their journey up the Missouri, the 60 foot keelboat Flora was frequently delayed by increasingly shallow water. This gave the party extra time to study the surroundings, allowing Bodmer ample time to sketch the landscapes they beheld. Maximilian reported that "herds of buffaloes were in the vicinity, and several of these colossal animals crossed the Missouri in our sight"; after the party killed several of the "wild oxen", a white wolf lingered in the area to dine on the remains.
