Herend Porcelain Rothschild Birds Cigarette Lighter
Evans Case tabletop golden metal cigarette lighter, 1950s Art Deco Streamline, Hungarian Herend porcelain case: hand painted Rothschild Birds [and two butterflies]; a miniature painting, the birds are smaller than one inch, the fine painted butterflies are c.3/4". Herend porcelain mark with "Hungary" on the bottom, the model and series number of Herend are blind written under glaze and hand painted over glaze.
Connoisseurs consider this pattern, first created in 1860 for the Rothschild family of Europe, to be the epitome of hand painting on porcelain. Twelve different motifs portray a 19th century tale about Baroness Rothschild, who lost her pearl necklace in the garden of her Vienna residence. Several days later it was found by her gardener, who saw birds playing with it in a tree.
