Hermann Herzog - Norwegian mountain landscape with two waterfalls
Hermann Herzog
Norwegian mountain landscape with two waterfalls
Oil on canvas (relined). 85 x 126.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: H. Herzog 61.
Before Hermann Herzog emigrated to the United States in 1869, where his works are considered part of the Hudson River School, he primarily painted Norwegian landscapes, such as the present dramatic mountain scene with steeply rising rock formations and two prominent waterfalls. The dramatic lighting, especially in the cloud formations, as well as the choice of motifs, suggest that Herzog studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, among others, under Andreas Achenbach.
The very elaborately designed decorative frame is probably the original frame.
Provenance
In third generation in a north German private collection.
