Catalogue Note:
In around 1970, Heuer introduced its first 18K gold Carrera, the Reference 1158, a watch that Jack Heuer famously described as his favorite Carrera of all. There are a number of reasons why this is the case, it carried the brand’s first automatic and in-house chronograph (caliber 11), but it is the base of the relationship between Heuer and the Ferrari F1 team and their drivers in the 1970s.

The relationship between the Heuer and Ferrari brands commenced in 1971 and ran through 1979. Initially, Jack Heuer had hoped that Ferrari would pay Heuer for their precision timing instruments, but Enzo Ferrari quickly put an end to that idea, instead insisting that Heuer pay Ferrari to supply the instruments in return for decals on the Formula 1 cars, and a Heuer branded patch sown onto the racing suits of their drivers (initially Niki Lauda, and Clay Regazzoni). Jack Heuer used this as an opportunity to build further relationships in the motorsport world, cementing the brand’s reputation in the motorsport field. Over the period, Jack presented all the Ferrari F1 drivers with Ref 1158’s including Jacky Ickx, Mario Andretti, Niki Lauda, Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter. Additionally, Jack gifted 1158s to other drivers including Ronnie Peterson, Joe Siffert and Mike Hailwood, the British racer who was given the watch to commemorate an act of extreme bravery, stopping in the middle of his very first race to extract fellow driver Clay Regazzoni at the South African Grand Prix.

The present watch belongs to the third version (from circa 1972) of the 1158S. It has a 'second execution' dial (brushed gold applied markers, with gold at center and black edges, and numerals 1-through-12 on hour recorder) and 'second execution' hands (brushed gold with black edges and points). The current example is presented in very good condition. The case back retains its sticker.
